What to expect - FAQ

Can massage benefit me?

Of course! If you want pain relief, if you want to enhance sports performance, or if you just want to relax, massage is a good way to do it. Everyday activities impact your body, and not always in a good way. Massage can help counteract the effects of modern life. The older population can benefit from massage, as it enhances flexibility and circulation. The bedridden can also be helped in this regard. There are some conditions where massage is not recommended, however. Your practitioner will ask for information regarding specific health conditions from which you may be suffering in order to determine if massage or bodywork therapies are contraindicated. In some cases, the practitioner will need your doctor's permission before providing services.

What are the benefits of massage and bodywork?

Massage and bodywork can help release chronic muscular tension and pain such as migraines or repetitive stress injuries; it can improve circulation, increase joint flexibility, reduce mental and physical fatigue and stress, promote faster healing of injured muscle tissue, improve posture, and reduce blood pressure. Massage and bodywork can promote better sleep, improve concentration, reduce anxiety and create an overall sense of well-being.

Where will my massage session take place?

Your massage or bodywork session will take place in a warm, comfortable, quiet room. Soft music may be played to help you relax. You will lie on a table especially designed for your comfort. Pregnant or overweight clients will be afforded the use of cushions designed for support and comfort.

Who will perform the massage?

Your session will be conducted by a professional who has received proper training in a variety of techniques. Practitioners are licensed or certified, according to the state in which they were trained. In addition, our therapists keep current with developments in bodywork through continuing education courses. Although no two massages are exactly alike, you may request a certain technique or modality.

Can I request a male or a female therapist?

Absolutely! Back in Touch Massage Therapy has both male and female therapists available at all times. Regardless of whether you prefer a male or female therapist, keep in mind that all our therapists are trained professionals and will keep you draped with sheets or towels throughout the treatment.

I had a massage with one therapist, but now I would like to try a different therapist. Will that be a problem?

Not at all. Each massage therapist approaches a session differently. You may want to try the massages offered by many of our therapists to find the best "fit." Our therapists understand this and are not offended by such a request.

Must I be completely undressed?

Most massage and bodywork techniques are traditionally performed with the client unclothed; however, it's up to you. Remove as much or as little clothing as you feel comfortable with, remembering that you will be appropriately draped during treatment.

Will the practitioner be present when I disrobe?

The practitioner will leave the room while you undress, relax onto the table, and cover yourself with a freshly laundered sheet.

What parts of my body will be massaged?

Your therapist will discuss the desired outcome of the session with you (i.e.-relaxation, pain relief, etc.). This will determine which areas of your body require massage. A typical full body session includes work or your back, arms, legs, feet, hands, head, neck and shoulders, and, if you request it, abdominal work. You will not be touched on or near your genitals (male or female) or breasts (female).

Will oil be used?

A light oil, scented or unscented, will be used to permit bodywork to be done without excessive friction on the skin. The lubricants used should moisturize the skin and be readily absorbed. You may request the use of lotion or cream instead of oil. If you have a preference for a particular product, you may bring you own massage oil or cream.

What will the massage feel like?

It depends on the techniques used. Generally in a Swedish massage, your session will start with broad, flowing strokes which help calm your nervous system and relax muscle tension. As your body relaxes, pressure may gradually be increased to address specific areas of muscle tightness. Massage is most effective when your body is not resisting. If you feel discomfort, you should communicate it to the therapist immediately so that he or she can take a different approach.

How long will the session last?

That is your choice. The average session lasts one hour, although many people prefer a 90 minute session. A half-hour massage will only address specific areas, such as neck and shoulders, back, or legs and feet.

What should I do during the session?

It's your treatment-make yourself comfortable! Many people just close their eyes and completely relax; others like to talk to their therapists. We encourage you to communicate with your therapist about pressure, technique, and especially any discomfort you might experience. The practitioner will take his or her cue from you, and during the session will either gently move you or tell you what is needed (such as lifting your arm).

Should I tip my therapist?

Again, this is up to you. A tip is not required, and will not affect any subsequent massage you receive. Our therapists of course appreciate an acknowledgement of good or excellent service. If your treatment was not wholly satisfactory, please tell us before you leave. We value your feedback and look for ways to improve your services and give you the best massage experience possible.

How should I expect to feel after the session?

Most people feel very relaxed. Some experience freedom from long-term aches and pains developed from tension or repetitive activity. After an initial period of feeling slowed down, people often experience increased energy and greater productivity which can last for days. Since toxins are released from your muscles during a massage, it is recommended that you drink plenty of water afterwards.
